MUSIC VIDEOS (in ALL caps)

There was a time where we had a channel on the boob tube that played nothing but music videos. Sadly this station is now overrun with reality shows and the like. This is our quest to return to the times where we got money for nothing and chicks were practically free.

My Girls

A video for 'My Girls' from Animal Collective's new album Merriweather Post Pavilion. Out now on Domino. Produced by: Knowmore Productions Animated by: Jon Vermilyea Edited/VFX by: Chad Von Nau

On this song, vocalist Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear, sings about how he eschews material things and just wants four walls to keep his wife (fashion designer Fernanda Pereira) and daughter (Nadja) safe. He explained to The Sun January 9, 2009: "I'm not big on possessions but, for some reason, being the owner of a space, a safe house for my wife and my daughter, has become the most important thing for me, for better or worse."

This Year

This song always seems to be my farewell song to the year. Even though the true meaning of the song I believe is about an abusive step father, it just becomes an anthem to me to get through one more tough year and to have some hope for a new one.

On October 6, 2009, The Mountain Goats performed "Psalms 40:2" on The Colbert Report. It was their first television appearance. Darnielle also had a short interview with Colbert in which he professed himself a fan.

Mountains

This song became the Biffy Clyro's biggest hit to date, principally as it was a one-off release, well ahead of the accompanying album. The band recorded it in advance as they were unwilling to wait another year to release it.

The band's songwriter, Simon Neil, says the song was influenced by the loss of his mother. She died at the tragically early age of 52, while the band were recording Puzzle.

The song was once titled "Teeth and Mountains."

Back Against The Wall

Cage the Elephant come from the town of Bowling Green in Kentucky, which is best known for manufacturing Chevrolet Corvettes. The alternative rock group was formed in 2005 by front man Matt Schultz and his guitarist brother Brad. They were joined by their friends Daniel Titchenor (bass), Lincoln Parish (guitar) and Jared Champion (drums).

According to their MySpace site the band's name comes from Indian Hindu philosophy where the elephant is the symbol of strength and goodness. They explained: "It's strong and it's honest and it's loyal. And our name kind of stands for people, the whole of society, the people we all are by nature – it seems like people want to cage the elephant. It seems like they want to cage all the good in the world. It's not just the government or the media, it's everywhere. But you turn on the news and hear 'today 26 people got gunned down, and one guy got his head chopped off, and here's a picture of it. It's like there's no hope, and somebody's caged the elephant. But you can't do that."

Shake It Out

Isaac Rentz directed the new video for one of our favorite bands, Manchester Orchestra.

He says this about preparing for the shoot:

I watched Over The Top around 10 times over the course of the production, which is about 9 more times than anyone should have to watch Stallone do pushups on the back of a parked 18-wheeler.

Single Ladies (cover)

jack conte and nataly dawn started making music together in the summer of '08, and decided to form a band. pomplamoose thus represents the collaborative efforts of the two afore-mentioned musicians. it also means grapefruit in french.

Single Ladies, by Beyonce, covered by Pomplamoose

This cover is a VideoSong, a new medium with 2 rules:
1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).

Wrong Way

This song refers to Annie, a 12 year old girl soon to be forced into a life of prostitution by her "drunk-ass" dad. The narrator of the song, sexually attracted to Annie, removes her from the situation, but she ultimately leaves him as well.

The song's music video is heavily inspired by the Oliver Stone film Natural Born Killers, with a young, Mallory Knox-like heroine in the role of the prostitute Annie. It also bears a resemblance to the plot line of Taxi Driver.

Camilo (The Magician)

It wasn’t too long ago that Said The Whale treated some lucky media, industry, and friends to a private boat cruise on a 68-foot antique yacht to preview their album Islands Disappear. They made the trip around English Bay with Camilo (the magician in which the first single is named after), and while this party was a small one, this release has been anything but.

Following the October 13th release Islands Disappear quickly climbed the itunes charts hitting #1 on the alternative chart and #5 on the album chart all in the span of two days. Said The Whale were nominated for a Verge Artist of the Year award for the second year in a row, landed on the cover of The Georgia Straight, were invited to play the Edge 102.1 studios, and received a plug from George Stroumboulopoulos himself on The Hour. Album copies are quickly selling off the shelves in record stores across the country, and the media is all over them.

"There isn't a bad song in this bunch. Said The Whale have gone and made a career-defining album much sooner, I'd say, than anyone expected them to." - CHARTattack

Never Let Me Go

Family Force 5 is from and was formed in Atlanta, Georgia. The three leading members of the band, Soul Glow Activatur, Phatty and Crouton, are sons of Jerome Olds, a Christian artist from the late 1980s. Prior to the formation of Family Force 5, the brothers were members of a "boy band" known as The Brothers, releasing Fact and Reality (1994) and RPM (1995). Both albums were released on Star Song Records, and produced by their father.

Eels is an American rock band formed by singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E.

"Hombre Lobo" is Spanish for "wolf man" or "werewolf" and may be a reference to E's unusually long beard which he originally grew when writing the song "Dog Faced Boy"

'Get U Home' - VIKING's Sex Drugs & Rock n Roll Remix

A melting-pot of laid-back melodies, hip-hop rhythms and acoustic guitars, Shwayze’s self-titled debut pays homage to an all-day-and-into-the-night party lifestyle colored by the rolling tides of his hometown beaches, and the rolling papers that flavor the proceedings. Collaborating with Shwayze, Adler co-wrote all of the songs on the album, producing and providing backing vocals along the way.

Dirty White Coats

The Flying Change is the songwriting and performance vehicle for New York-based songwriter and technologist (ed. note: not really, but it sounds futuristic does it not?) Sam Jacobs. Sam used to write and record under the name Lipstik but people found the name distracting and he didn’t care enough not to change it. As Lipstik, Jacobs released one full length titled ‘Everything Is Good’ in 2006, one EP titled ‘There Is Only One Thing’ in Winter 2008 and numerous demos, covers, and experiments through his monthly email list (which remains, thankfully, intact).

On the video:

Let’s say you finally fall asleep. Well, it won’t last. Because the nurses need to check your vitals every so often and that wakes you up and then as the sun is rising the doctors start making their rounds. Here is how doctors are: they are well schooled. They exude smug self-satisfaction. They don’t really listen because most of the time it’s nothing even when it might not be and you’re probably being too dramatic and whiny about it and they went to school for a long time so why should they know your case file, why should they be briefed on what’s ailing you, they should just look at the file and then you can have this weird disjointed conversation with a new doctor every morning and every f-ing time you can tell them the same story and the good thing is that they’re completely inconsistent and won’t really know nor, truthfully, seem to care about what’s ailing you and perhaps they’ll contradict themselves and regardless, I shit you not, it really does not feel like they’re listening. There’s this dazed dreamy look in their eyes as they hold their clipboards. And the whole time you’re thinking, “This doesn’t make sense. They don’t seem like they actually care about whether you’re feeling better or getting better.” And nothing happens on time and there’s this weird compulsion to silence and submission to authority but this authority in question is the combination of passive uncaring doctors and passive uncaring insurance companies and agitated irritated nurses. And they have to keep taking blood but maybe you have smallish veins and so that means that, after a few days of being in the hospital and maybe you already have a line in but they need to draw blood from somewhere else they keep sticking you with a needle and sticking you and sticking you and looking for a vein and maybe this was just at that very moment when you might fall asleep and they’re sticking you and they’re sticking you and they’re sticking you and all it does is cause more pain and you’re wondering, “When. When will I feel better?”

I'd even cut my hair and change my name...

In the video, every few words are mimed by a different person, resulting in over 100 people participating. Some are regular people, but many celebrities show up as well, including Eliza Dushku, Paul Wall, Wayne Gretzky, Gene Simmons, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kid Rock, UFC Fighter Chuck Liddel, and Nelly Furtado.

The spoken interludes are performed by, certified Rock Star, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Gibbons appears in the video as well.

Single Ladies

In this song, Beyoncé urges ladies to dump their boyfriends if they don't propose. In an interview with Essence magazine, Beyoncé said when she married Jay-Z in April 2008, she didn't even want an engagement ring, so it can be safely assumed that the Texan singer was performing this song as her feisty alter-ego "Sasha."

In fact, while on tour, Beyoncé halted the song during a performance at the BankAtlantic Center in Florida. She then handed the microphone over to a male fan who announced: "Beyoncé, you told me if I like it, I need to put a ring on it." He then dropped to one knee, produced a ring and asked his stunned girlfriend to marry him, in front of the 20,000+ crowd. His girlfriend, seemingly shocked, nodded yes.

In case you watched as this video was snubbed for Best Female Video and Kanye West had a... /cough... protest... I would have to say, this IS better than Swift's video...and maybe someone needed to say it out loud. On Stage. With the mic that was in Taylor's hand a moment before.

But the Video of the Year is...

We Made You

Yes that's right; the time is here to pluck off the year's most talked about women, and imagine they are all lining up to date none other than Slim Shady. You've had a dream like this before haven't you?

Joseph Kahn directed this unforgettable, unmistakeable video for Eminem's "We Made You." Hey bitches, he's basically saying, we made you who you are, now come hang on my star. Don't miss Dr. Dre's cameo as Captain of the Enterprise...

I hate the fact that I even had to sit through all the other entries in the Best Hip-Hop category, because they were dub-to-the-eeeeeak.

Live Your Life

...and the winner for Best Male Video is...

T.I.'s Live Your Life featuring Rihanna!

It's a tough category. When you are up against Kanye and Jay-Z, you don't expect to win...but this is my underdog pick!

The entire video for "Live Your Life" is shot in a Memento-like reverse chronological order. If that doesn’t hold your attention, T.I.'s hot co-star Rihanna will.

Decode

I know what the best rock video is. It's the one that makes you laugh, makes you sing, and reminds you what videos are all about.

But the one that will win an award was performed by a band fronted by lil' 21-year-old hottie Hayley Williams. You see, Twilight fans are about as ravenous as the Cullen clan and their counterparts. And traditionally, MTV fans love the song-from-the-movie-filmed-on-the-movie-set videos.

And everyone is going to appreciate seeing this particular punk wood pixie standing so vulnerable as she belts out the lyrics to "Decode" in the middle of the forest.

My thoughts you can't decode

Today

Pumpkins Announce New 19 Yr Old Drummer.

In addition, the Pumpkins will make “a major announcement” about a new album next month, a band spokesman said Monday.

Byrne was among 1,000 drummers who answered singer-guitarist Billy Corgan’s call to audition for the job last April. Chamberlin, who joined the band soon after its formation in the ‘80s, quit the Pumpkins in March. In explaining the move on his Web site, Chamberlin said, “I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, ‘Cash the check’ so to speak.”

Corgan is the only original member left in the Pumpkins, which became one of Chicago’s most commercially successful bands after emerging in 1988. Byrne is a veteran of various Portland indie bands, including Moses, Smell the Roses and the Mercury Tree.

-Chicago Tribune

One of my favorite songs/videos from my youth. I know that it's unlikely, but I kinda hope this new album will have some of that Siamese Dream vibe to it.

My brother claims that Asher Roth won't even be relevant a year from now. I think he is wrong. What do you think?

The sad thing is even Rivers agrees with my brother:

"This originally sampled Weezer's "Say It Ain't So," from their 1994 self-titled debut album. However, Roth had to re-work the track when Weezer's Rivers Cuomo refused to clear it, even after being offered 100% of the publishing."

Atomic Garden

This was written in response to US President George H. W. Bush's comment that the US would win the Gulf War (the first one) because God is on their side. It's pretty much a satirical view on the general American thought that the United States is the most powerful nation in the world because it is "One nation under God."

Money For Nothing

Sting sings on this and helped write it. That's him at the beginning singing "I want my MTV." Sting did not want a songwriting credit, but his record company did because they would have earned royalties from it. They claimed it sounded very similar to a song Sting wrote for The Police: "Don't Stand So Close To Me."

Video/MP3 Posting Policy

1. I will gladly take any mp3/video down that any artist or anyone associated with them asks me to take down. Send an email to: inallcaps at gmail.com

2. If the mp3/video has been posted elsewhere, I will just link to it. No need to post it twice.

3. I believe that I am introducing my readers to music that they'll like and the result will be more music sales. If I felt otherwise, I wouldn't be doing it. I buy music and I think you should too.

To sum it up: If you are an artist or scary lawyer type and want something removed from here, just email us and it's gone! We're easy like that!
